Storylines
Barcelona finished 2023 on a rocky note and picked up just two wins in their last five games of the year. That stretch of games included a notable 2-0 win over Atleti as well as a 4-2 loss to second place Girona, and though the results differed, one trait has been a constant this season for Xavi's team -- a habit of being wasteful in attack. On their best days, Barcelona are able to notch a vast number of shots but struggle frequently to put them on target or even register quality strikes, which has seen them squander opportunities both in La Liga play and the Champions League.
Minus the notable absences who picked up long-term injuries several weeks ago like Gavi and Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Barcelona will have many of their mainstays available to begin 2024. That includes Sergi Roberto and Joao Felix, each of whom have scored twice in the team's last five, as well as star forward Robert Lewandowski. The defensive effort will be just as important against Las Palmas since Barcelona have just one clean sheet in their last five matches and have conceded 10 goals during that stretch.
Prediction
Despite their problems, Barcelona have all the pieces in place to pick a routine victory over Las Palmas. The hosts have scored just 15 times in 18 games so do not pose the biggest attacking threat, and La Liga's reigning champions have enough going up top to give themselves an advantage. Pick: Las Palmas 0, Barcelona 2
The Blaugrana head to the islands for their 26th league game of the season and they will be aiming to extend their unbeaten league run
Barcelona make the trip to Gran Canaria on Thursday as they take on Las Palmas in La Liga.
Ernesto Valverde's side are seven points clear at the top of the Primera Division and they come into the game brimming with confidence after a 6-1 win over Girona at the weekend.
They will hope to maintain that lead at the very least by beating the islanders, which would set them up nicely for their top-two meeting with Atleti this coming Sunday.
Las Palmas, meanwhile, find themselves in the relegation zone and face a tough task if they are to overcome a side that already defeated them 3-0 earlier in the season.

Match Preview
Since losing to local rivals Espanyol in January, Barcelona have put together a 10-match unbeaten run and, having put six goals past Girona, they appear to have picked up the pace once more.
They have taken it up a gear at the right time, with Liga matches against Atletico Madrid and Malaga on the horizon this month, as well as a crunch Champions League last 16 tie against Chelsea.
However, despite that, they will have to be wary of struggling Las Palmas, who have pulled off results at home against the likes of Valencia, Real Betis and Athletic.
When they last faced off - at the Camp Nou in October - the game was played without spectators, which made for an eerie atmosphere, but did not stop Lionel Messi and Co. from winning.
Valverde will be expecting more of the same on Thursday and he will be hoping his key men come through unscathed with one eye on the upcoming match against Atleti.
